On a special day for CSK, as it was the anniversary of their first IPL game at Chepauk, LSG had won the toss and opted to bowl first. CSK would lose Ajinkya Rahane early before Daryl Mitchell, who had come in for Rachin Ravindra, joined Ruturaj in the middle. The duo put on 45 runs for the second wicket before Mitchell fell to Yash Thakur. The CSK skipper would steady things with Ravindra Jadeja, who also struggled to find momentum.

Ruturaj would then take the onus on himself to accelerate the innings as he reached his fifty in 28 balls. After getting to fifty, Gaikwad batted smartly and was able to get a boundary in the next few overs to keep the momentum going.

He would then shift gears once Jadeja fell for 16 off 19 balls. Gaikwad broke free after a bit of a lull period with a big six off Marcus Stoinis and kept running brilliantly between the wickets as well. The CSK skipper would move into the 90s with a six off Mohsin Khan. Another six off Yash Thakur got him to 99 and hit a boundary to reach the landmark.
