Take Bairstow out of firing line: Cook wants England to drop batter for 4th Test

Alastair Cook has urged England to drop Jonny Bairstow from the lineup for the 4th Test in Ranchi against as the batter’s struggles continued in Rajkot.

How has Bairstow struggled in India so far?

Bairstow has had a horrid time during the tour, scoring just 102 runs from six innings at an average of 26. In Rajkot, the England batter was dismissed for a duck and then for 4 in the second innings, with question being raised on the form of him and Joe Root.

Bairstow’s dismissal for a duck in his first innings in Rajkot made him the batter with the most ducks against India in Test cricket, tallying up to eight ducks.

Cook, while talking to TNT Sports, feels that it would be better to protect Bairstow at the moment.

“He’s had a tough tour so far. And India is a very hard place to continue going on that on the treadmill. I’m taking Jonny out of the firing line, to protect the player,” said Cook.

Cook also suggested that England should bring in Dan Lawrence, someone who is fresh at the moment.

“someone who is fresh and clear of all the debris so far in this series,” said Cook.

McCullum backs Bairstow despite poor run of form

Despite the noise around Bairstow’s form, England coach Brendon McCullum backed the batter to come out of his slump and suggested that he would be playing the match in Ranchi.

“I haven’t even seen the wicket. But I’d anticipate Jonny would be playing, yes,” McCullum told reporter when he was asked if Bairstow would make his 99th Test appearance in Ranchi.

McCullum said that while he knows Bairstow has been struggling, they would continue to give him the confidence he needs and block out the external noise to keep him focused.

“I’m not blind but he’s done so well for us and he’s had such an impactful career …,” McCullum said.

“So from our point of view, we’ve got to keep on giving him confidence and block out a lot of the external noise as well and keep him really present and focused on what he’s trying to achieve, and I’m sure Jonny will come good. “I will) spend a bit of time with Jonny and remind him that he’s such a wonderful player.”
