Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul was dejected at the post-match presentation after his team suffered a crushing defeat by 6 wickets against Chennai Super Kings in Match 8 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 on Friday.
PBKS were put on the backfoot very early in the match by Deepak Chahar, who bagged 4 wickets for 13 runs in his opening spell to put CSK in the driver’s seat. Punjab could never recover from the early blows and managed just 106 for 8 in the 20 overs after being asked to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
CSK then rode on Moeen Ali (46) and Faf du Plessis’s (36 not out) second-wicket partnership of 66 to chase down the target in 15.4 overs.
Rahul, who was run out for 5 by Ravindra Jadeja’s direct-hit in the 3rd over, sounded extremely disappointed with his team’s batting performance and urged his teammates to learn from their mistakes and move forward.
“There’s not much more to say. When any team loses five wickets in the first six or seven overs…. It [The pitch] did [play differently]. It was more sticky and tacky than what it looked like.
“Deepak with his knuckle ball got a couple of wickets. Myself getting run-out. It wasn’t a 110-wicket, maybe 150-160. We have pace in our attack and we obviously want to use that. Playing in India can be tough and cruel,” Rahul said after the match.
“We will review the key points that we spoke before the game and like you mentioned yourself that’s how cricket goes.
“You smile and see how you can do better if we get a similar situation when we play at the Wankhede again. It’s important to learn from our mistakes, that’s the kind of team that we want to be,” Rahul signed off.
Punjab Kings have very little time to turn things around as they will next face Delhi Capitals at the same venue in Mumbai in 2 days time.
