No Player of the Match award yet for Yashasvi: Bigger prize waiting, says Chopra

Yashasvi Jaiswal might have missed out on two Player of the Match awards despite scoring two double hundreds in the ongoing Test series between India and England, but the 23-year-old opener is set for a bigger prize, former India opener Aakash Chopra

India’s explosive opener, Jaiswal, has been in terrific form in the ongoing Test series against England. In the 6 innings so far, the batter has scored 545 runs at a staggering average of 109 runs with a strike rate of 81.1. In 3 matches, he has scored a fifty and 2 double-hundreds with 50 boundaries and 22 sixes.

“Yashasvi may not have won a single POTM thus farâ€æbut he will walk away with the Player of the Series award in Dharamsala,” Chopra wrote on ‘X’.

WHY HAS JAISWAL NOT WON THE AWARD YET?

Yashasvi Jaiswal started the series on a thunderous note with an aggressive 80-run knock during India’s 1st innings in Hyderabad. However, India lost the match by 28 runs and Ollie Pope, who scored 196 runs during England’s 2nd innings, was named as the Player of the match.

Yashasvi broke the shackles and stepped up in the absence of senior players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the 2nd Test. The 22-year-old became the 3rd youngest Indian to slam a double century. He played a scintillating knock of 209 runs from 290 balls during India’s 1st innings. However, Jasprit Bumrah with his match figures of 9/81 was awarded as the player of the match. Bumrah’s 6/45 during England’s 1st innings was the best figures by an Indian pacer at home. India won the Test match in Vizag by 106 runs.

Jaiswal was at his absolute best during the 3rd Test match as he played a belligerent knock of 214 runs from 236 deliveries during India’s 2nd innings. He notched up his 2nd consecutive double century to become the 3rd Indian player after Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli to achieve this feat.

Jaiswal’s six-hitting spree deflated England’s bowling attack and eventually, the batters also crumbled to a mammoth target of 557 runs. The cricketing world was in awe of the aggressive stroke play of the batter who smashed 12 sixes in his knock. However, the player of the match award yet again evaded the player as Ravindra Jadeja was given the award. The star all-rounder and hometown hero was rewarded for scoring a hundred and picking up his 13th 5-wicket haul in the 3rd Test.
