Nico Rosberg doesn’t feel Fernando Alonso is taking up someone’s seat in F1: Deserves to be where he is

Former Formula One World Champion Nico Rosberg has said that there shouldn’t be any doubt about Fernando Alonso’s future in F1 as he is driving brilliantly and isn’t taking up someone’s seat.

Alonso pulled off a brilliant performance during the Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying stages as he battled treacherous conditions to put his Alpine in second spot. The former World Champion finished in seventh in the race but was handed a time penalty, which meant that he finished P9.

Last weekend was another reminder that Alonso still has the abillity to pull off strong performances despite being the oldest driver on the grid. The Spaniard is currently 10th in the driver’s standings.

Rosberg heaped praise on the former World Champion during Sky Sports’ Any Driven Monday programme, saying that he is a big fan of him and skill-wise, he is one of the best of all time.

“I am a big fan of Alonso at the moment. We all know that talent and skill-wise he is one of the best of all time.

“He sometimes lacked that social competence he often had difficulties being in the best teams with the best cars. They didn’t really want him anymore because of burning bridges in the past.”

“That was definitely one of his weaknesses in terms of getting even better results, but in terms of talent he is surely one of the best of all time or right up there. For him to still drive like this is just so cool,” said Rosberg.

The former Mercedes driver also said that he felt gutted for Alonso that he didn’t secure a podium finish in Canada.

“I was so gutted for him [in Canada], I wanted him to be on the podium. I think Alpine did a little mistake, they could have taken a jump into the pitlane.

“He is driving so awesomely there shouldn’t be any discussion that he is taking up anyone’s seat. He more than deserves to be where he is,” said Rosberg.
