IPL 2021: Deepak Chahar dedicates his 4 for 13 vs PBKS to fan who asked him to ‘not play the next match’

Deepak Chahar starred in Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) second match of the IPL 2021 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) by picking up 4 important wickets. The pacer rattled the stumps of opener Mayank Agarwal on the fourth ball of Friday’s match in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium and went on to land 3 more powerful punches on KL Rahul’s men.

The 28-year-old sent Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran and Deepa Hooda back in the pavilion inside 7 overs as Punjab were left reeling on 26 for 5. Chahar bowled as many as 18 dot balls taking 4 for wickets for just 13 runs, his best figures in the IPL.

His perfect display of swing bowling accompanied by a lot of variations helped 3-time champions restrict Punjab to a paltry total of 106 for 8. CSK gunned down the total in 15.4 overs and won the match by 6 wickets. The Agra-born pacer was declared Man of the Match.

In a chat with his teammate and fellow pacer Shardul Thakur after the completion of the match, Deepak Chahar has revealed about an interesting message which he got from a fan on social media. The fan had texted Deepak after CSK’s 7-wicket loss against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their IPL 2021 opener. In the match, the fast bowler had leaked 36 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket.

“I was watching social media after reaching my room. A boy had texted me saying, ‘Bhai aap bohot acche bowler ho but ek request hai — agla match mat khelna’ (You are a good bowler but I request you to not play the next match). Expectations are very high and performing in every match is important. So, this is for that guy who messaged me. This performance would not have come if I was not playing. Don’t declare a player bad on the basis his one performance. Please support them,” Deepak Chahar said.

MS Dhoni lauds Deepak Chahar

CSK captain MS Dhoni talked highly of his pacer in the post-match presentation ceremony. Dhoni said that Deepak has matured as a death bowler as well but he completed his entire quota in a single spell because he was getting a lot of help from the pitch.

“Chahar is somebody who has developed as a death overs bowler too. If I’m looking to attack and there is movement I try to bowl him out because he gets more out of the pitch. As a bowling unit we have more resources. I was looking to attack, so bowled his four overs and it helps in becoming fit because to bowl 4 successive overs you need to be fit,” Dhoni said.

Deepak Chahar also holds the record of the best bowling figures in T20 internationals. He scalped 6 wickets by spending just 7 runs in 3.2 overs in a match against Bangladesh in 2019.
