Former Mumbai Indians off-spinner Pragyan Ojha lauded Suryakumar Yadav’s batting performance against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday in Match 48 of the Indian Premier League 2020.
Suryakumar Yadav smashed 79 not out off 43 balls with 10 boundaries and 3 sixes to help MI chase down 165 against RCB. His knock came a day after he was overlooked for the limited-overs India squads for the national team’s Australia tour next month.
The BCCI chief selection committee overlooked the Mumbai batting star despite his consistent performances not just in the ongoing IPL but across formats in the domestic circuit in the recent past. Suryakumar had hit 362 runs at an average of over 40 and a strike rate of over 155 at IPL 2020.
“Maybe he has to go back to domestic cricket and get runs, and in the next IPL as well because that is how you have to answer your critics. If you perform like you have been doing it’s just a matter of time.
“It was a brilliant knock, he was so calm and composed. The way he didn’t even show his aggression, in a very subtle way he said, ‘I’m there, I will do it for MI’. A person who has got so many runs in domestic cricket and IPL did not get picked.
“We have seen a lot of people lose their temper when they are dropped or not picked, or underperform. But this man said I’m just going to go and do my job. It’s a great statement and I love his sportsmanship,” Ojha said on Sports Today.
Even MI stand-in skipper Kieron Pollard spoke about Surya’s Team India snub after the game, saying that it would have hurt the Mumbai batsman.
“Deep down inside he must be very very disappointed to bot ave donned the blue for India. He just keeps getting better. Again as an individual if you keep staying consistent, you will be rewarded. Nothing happens before its time,” Pollard said during the post-match presentation ceremony.
