A lot of questions are being raised on the old horses of Chennai Super Kings after their team’s ouster before the play-offs stage of the ongoing IPL 2020 season. The 3-time champions have won only 4 out of their 12 matches till now and are ready to play for pride in their last 2 league stage matches.
Apart from Faf du Plessis, none of their batsman have been able to score more than 300 runs in the season. Some old glimpses od their old self kept apart, CSK have failed miserably to strike in unision. The franchise’s captain MS Dhoni is 39-year-old, Shane Watson also 39, Dwayne Bravo 37, Faf du Plessis 36, Kedar Jadhav and Ambati Rayudu 35. Watching their current scenario, a question about a big reshuffle is unavoidable.
MS Dhoni’s “saw no spark in youngsters” have added fuel to the idea of a much-needed makeover the team will need to go to be relevant in the upcoming season of the very iconic and successful franchise.
But their former pacer Ashish Nehra thinks a big reshuffle is not in card because of a MS Dhoni, who is mentally very strong. Nehra, who himself played professional cricket till the age of 39, has reckoned that age bracket of 30-35 is not at something which should matter.
The former India pacer has asserted that it’s just one bad IPL season should not be a reason to question the capabilities of Chennai Super Kings.
“MS Dhoni knows how to take it in his stride. We are talking about a guy who is mentally strong. I don’t think it’s that big a deal for him. Every time, you don’t qualify it hurts. But I hope we see MS Dhoni again and see the same old CSK.
“I don’t think so (big reshuffle happening next year). 30-35 is not old. Somebody like me, I played IPL until I was 39. And if with my body, as a fast bowler, I can play at the age of 39, they can play for longer. Maybe Shane Watson… we still hope that he is there next year. But apart from that, I don’t think they will look to shuffle it too much.
“We have seen in the IPL, people talk about CSK (players) being 30-35 and in the wrong side of 35. But we have seen what they are capable of doing. It’s just one season and I hope we see the old CSK again next season, Nehra said while talking to Star Sports.
MS Dhoni already planning for the next season
After 10 wickets humiliating loss against Mumbai Indians, MS Dhoni had talked aboy a clearer picture next season. In his post-match reaction he had also mentioned the word ‘auction’, hinting of some buys who can serve the franchise successfully in the coming years.
“We need to have a clear picture for the next year. The kind of auction, where the venues will be, and you want to give the boys a chance to perform and show their talent,” the CSK captains had said.
