In touch with family, will ensure all support: MEA on Indian woman who died of suicide in US

Expressing grief over the suicide of Indian woman Mandeep Kaur in the United States, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday assured steps of redressal. The MEA further stated that the Indian embassy and consulate are in touch with the family of the deceased and local authorities in the US.

Social media platforms and the world stood zapped after Kaur’s suicide hit the bulletin as she had released a video prior to the suicide. Thousands condoled her death and social media was taken by storm after Mandeep Kaur’s video went viral. In the video, she alleged that her husband Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu had been torturing her. Narrating her ordeal in a video that she uploaded on social media, Kaur could be seen sobbing while her children cried in the background.

“The suicide of Mandeep Kaur, an Indian living in New York, was very tragic. Our Consulate in New York is in touch with the local authorities, police, family and the Indian community. Our embassy in Washington DC is in contact with US authorities, who assured us of appropriate action,” MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during a press briefing.

Bagchi also said that the US authorities have assured that perpetrators would be held liable and stringent action under their legislation will be taken.

“Our embassy and consulate in New York are trying their best effort in the investigation and will give assistance to the family members. They are in touch with family members and have close contacts,” the MEA spokesperson said.

Kaur was allegedly tortured by her husband and died by suicide after she publicised her years of traumatic domestic abuse inflicted by her spouse. The distressing video went viral and sparked massive outrage across India and abroad.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Mandeep Kaur in Queens, New York under the most tragic circumstances. We are in touch with the US authorities at the Federal and local levels as well as the community. We stand ready to render all assistance,” the Indian consulate in New York City tweeted while expressing grief over her demise.
