Glenn Maxwell’s excellent run of form continued in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s third match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as he slammed his second successive fifty of the new season, against Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai on Sunday.
Maxwell, who already has scores of 39 and 59 in the tournament this season, missed his maiden IPL hundred by just 22 runs. But he came up with a display of high-quality big-hitting, slamming 3 sixes and 9 boundaries for a 49-ball 79 that came under pressure.
Maxwell went after the Kolkata attack and made batting look easy before he joined hands with his idol AB de Villiers. The two added 53 runs in jus 34 balls before Maxwell departed for 78. de Villiers went berserk after Maxwell’s departure, hitting 76 not out in just 34 balls as Bangalore posted 204 for 4 in 20 overs.
The Australian all-rounder’s highest IPL score also saw him dethrone KKR’s Nitish Rana from the top spot on the list of batsmen with most runs this season. Maxwell now has 176 runs from just 3 matches.
Maxwell will be presented with the Orange Cap after the game as Rana departed for 18 in Kolkata’s big chase of 205.
“It’s been a long time since I wore this. It’s nice to start the tournament well. Looking to make most of the form,” Glenn Maxwell said.
“It was nice to get in early. It became hard to time the ball as the innings went on, looked to cash in against the new ball,” he added.
Speaking about his stand with AB de Villiers and the South Africa star’s finishing, Maxwell said: “He did it in the first game, showed his class, was an extraordinary knock, just shows that if you give yourself some time, you can play shots on this surface.”
Maxwell’s highest score before this hundred was 95 which he scored for his Punjab Kings against the Chennai Super Kings.
He was nowhere near his best in the previous seasons when he played for PBKS and the Delhi Capitals before that but seems to have finally found his footing at RCB, who have allowed him to bat up the order at No. 4 in all the 3 games so far.
Maxwell even acknowledged the fact that batting up the order is giving him the time to settle down and then go for the big shots once he gets a start at RCB, where he is enjoying the new challenges and responsibility that the franchise has entrusted upon him.
