Car crashes into gate of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office, police surround area

A car crashed into the front gate of the German Chancellery building which houses Angela Markel’s office on Wednesday. Pictures posted by news agency Reuters from the spot showed police officers inspecting the car involved in the crash.

News agency Associated Press reported that little damage has been caused by the incident. Only the metal gate of the chancellery appeared slightly bent.

Spokesperson Hartmut Paeth told the news agency that police are still investigating the scene but added that he did not have details about any injuries or arrests. Individuals deployed as part of rescue crews on the spot confirmed that the man driving the car was being treated in an ambulance standing in front of the chancellery.

The vehicle, a Volkswagen sedan, had the slogan “You dammed murderers of children and old people” written in white paint on one side. On the other side, it said: “stop the globalisation politics”.

The vehicle had license plates from the North Rhine-Westphalia area of Lippe and was driven away by the Berlin fire department. The car was minimally damaged with just a few scratches after the crash.

According to news agency Reuters, Merkel was scheduled to be hosting a video conference of German state premiers on Wednesday. The meeting was to decide the future course of action with regards to the pandemic.
